This makes use of the existing 3G and 2G networks and tries to channelize voice communication for 4G, by switching 4G to 3G for a voice call. In the absence of the above CS mechanism for a voice call on a 4G network, LTE networks use a mechanism called Circuit switched Fallback or CSFB. The details of this handover and the issues associated with it is what this article will talk about. But, when a voice call comes into your mobile, the 4G network is detached and the device attaches itself to a 3G network to use the CS network for a voice call. How does this happen? If you are within a 4G circle, all your data transactions will happen over the 4G network and will use the EPC framework and infrastructure. What does this mean? This means that – if you have a 4G handset, you will still need to use a 3G or 2G network to make a voice call. Hence, a typical 3G network is capable of transmitting packet data and circuit switched voice calls, etc. This is the bare-bone voice or CS GSM network. Hence, for a voice call to happen, a circuit has to be established between the A party and the B party numbers through the RAN (radio access network). Traditionally, GSM or 3G and below is a Circuit switched network. Hence, the current non-VoLTE implementation of LTE does not support voice calls or circuit switched communication. The below links can help you to understand LTE networks better:Īs it is elaborated in all these docs, LTE is basically a Evolved Packet Core network, relying on packet switching over IP. Each device that connects to an LTE or 4G network is assigned an IP address of its own. 4G, in its present state is a Packet switched or IP (Internet Protocol) implementation for communication, capable of transferring IP data packets, just like how data transfer happens in a web browser.
